Question: " My dog constantly has eye boogers- should I be concerned?"
Answer: Eye boogers in dogs- those small crusty or gooey bits in the corners of their eyes- are usually made up of dried tears, dust, and mucus. While a small amount is normal, excessive discharge could indicate an underlying issue such as allergies, infection, or a blocked tear duct. Some breeds, especially those with prominent eyes like Pugs or Shih Tzus, tend to produce more eye discharge than others. To clean your dog’ s eye boogers safely, use a clean, damp cloth or cotton pad soaked in warm water. Gently wipe from the corner of the eye outward, using a separate section or pad for each eye to avoid spreading potential infection. If the discharge is thick, green, yellow, or accompanied by redness or swelling, consult your veterinarian. Never use human eye drops or medications, unless specifically directed by your vet. Regular grooming and keeping the hair around the eyes trimmed can also help reduce buildup. While occasional eye boogers are no cause for concern, keeping your dog’ s eyes clean helps prevent irritation and ensures you’ ll notice any abnormal changes early.
