Fall-winter-off season golf considerations
Other than our own swing errors and inconsistencies, there are several other factors that can affect a golf ball outcome. Altitude, temperature and wind all play a role in messing with your special ball. Heading into the“ fall / winter” months of play, here are some more facts that you probably don’ t care about, but are important nonetheless.
Temperature affects drag and resistance, as well as ball compression. Warm conditions will reduce air density, leading to less drag and resistance and a farther carry. Cold conditions will do the opposite. As a general rule, for every 10-degree change of temperature expect approximately a two-yard distance change( relative to your home conditions). Colder conditions are more brutal in that carry and roll( usually due to wetter and softer turf conditions) suffer more. So, warm balls are happy balls, and you may want to rotate balls when you play, keeping one warm in your pocket.
Altitude can provide less drag due to thinner air, keeping the ball speed up longer with a flatter flight path and shallower descent angle, providing more roll. All this increases distance. Less dense air means less force applied to a spinning ball. This, of course, means less severe slices and hooks( there’ s that swing error thing again).
What you can expect then is a 1-2 % increase in distance for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Apply this to the change from your current playing elevation( which at Charbonneau is 150-200
feet above sea level).
Wind, which seems to always be into our faces in Charbonneau, is another significant factor. Lucky for us, it can come at us in three ways— head wind, tail wind and side wind.
Headwinds increase drag on the ball, slowing it down and also increasing lift( stays airborne longer). Head winds have a much greater impact on shot distance than a tailwind would.
Tailwinds reduce drag and significantly increase carry distance. A ball will likely fly at a lower height and have unpredictable but potentially more ground roll. Crosswinds will give you fits. These winds create sideways lift, pushing the ball from its intended path. This drift can exacerbate a slice or draw, leading to wayward shots. The greater the sideways force, the wider the dispersion of shots.
Balls that have a lower spin rate will be more resistant to the wind effects. That’ s why you see pros using several varieties of their favorite or sponsored ball depending on conditions. Launch angle, velocity and spin all determine how wind will affect the ball. Take note
that the effects are not linear. Different clubs will affect ball flight with winds differently. There you have it. Now go out and have fun this winter season.

I overheard this on a golf course and I would use this expression with discretion—“ Your putt looks good in those jeans.”
