Remembering Alan Kirk: A steady hand and a generous heart

by GREG LEO Government affairs consultant

The Wilsonville and Charbonneau community lost one of their finest with the passing of Alan Kirk on Aug. 31. Alan’ s warmth, humor and quiet leadership touched many lives and his influence on our city will long be remembered.

Alan served on the Wilsonville City Council for more than 13 years including eight years as council president, guiding the city through a period of growth and change. His steady leadership helped advance major projects such as the regional water treatment plant and City Hall, both now cornerstones of Wilsonville’ s infrastructure.
Former Mayor Charlotte Lehan recalled,“ Alan was a brilliant strategist but also a man of few words. In his eight years as my council president, unless he was promoting the Rotary
Concerts, his standard response to my request for Councilor Comments was almost always,‘ Nothing this evening, your honor.’”
His insistence on fiscal discipline was a key reason Wilsonville’ s Urban Renewal program succeeded while still benefiting other taxing entities. The school district and fire district often remarked that, if every jurisdiction handled Urban Renewal the way Wilsonville did, they’ d have no objection to it.
But Alan wasn’ t all business; he also knew how to make the driest of occasions fun.“ I’ ll never forget a City Council retreat where he brought the music( probably on a tape deck) and insisted on teaching all of us how to do the Macarena. He was hilariously not very good at it, but we all had a great time trying to follow his lead,” said Lehan.
Here in Charbonneau, Alan was a familiar and friendly presence at
community gatherings, always ready with a smile, a sports update or a word of encouragement. He had a gift for making people feel heard and appreciated, whether on the golf course, at a neighborhood event or while volunteering alongside his wife, Penny.
As a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Wilsonville, Alan exemplified the Rotary motto“ Service Above Self.” He and Penny devoted countless volunteer hours to community programs.
Susie Stevens, who served on the City Council for six years, shared:“ Alan gave me invaluable support and guidance when I ran for City Council, and his mentorship didn’ t end after I was elected. He continued to encourage and advise me as a new councilor, always generous with his time and wisdom. I’ ll never forget his words:‘ Yes, it’ s important work, but remember to enjoy it.’ His smile could brighten any room, and he will be deeply missed by so many.”
Greg Leo, who worked with Alan for over a decade on Wilsonville and Charbonneau civic projects, said,“ Alan was always the calm, certain, and positive voice in the room. He was a talented leader with the financial and communication skills to move the community conversation forward. It was an honor and a privilege to work with him. He shaped Wilsonville in many important ways.”
Professionally, Alan built a distinguished career as senior vice president and chief financial officer for OrePac Building Products, helping transform the company from a small regional distributor into a thriving business with hundreds of employees. Yet those who knew him best will remember not his titles, but his integrity, kindness and unwavering commitment to community.
Even after a debilitating stroke several years ago, Alan remained active
