This annual moment to honour those involved in war was originally called Armistice Day, acknowledging the armistice( suspension of fighting) that occurred on November 11, 1918 and ended World War One. Following World War Two, the day was renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate people who died in both wars. Red poppies are a symbol of the day, as the vibrant flower was the first thing to bloom on the former battlefields after World War One. All Australians are encouraged to observe a minute’ s silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, and take that time to remember those who lost their lives or suffered during war and conflicts.
