Taking Action in Residential Treatment
Young people in our Residential Treatment and Emergency Shelter( RTES) program have been making exciting strides in their personal lives and in the community.
In honor of Black History Month in February, residents researched the impacts of Black artists and created their own artwork depicting the portraits of such remarkable individuals. The resulting pieces were so impressive that a community-wide showcase was held at ACME Artworks in Louisville. The opening ceremony, hosted on April 21, provided residents the opportunity to share their vision and collaborate with local artists Sheila Fox and Chip Calloway.
Two residents of our RTES program recently completed the American Red Cross lifeguard certification after six weeks of dedicated training. With the encouragement and support of Della Irby, Director of our Aquatic Therapy Center, the two boys mastered water safety, CPR, and first aid, gaining career-based skills as well as a sense of pride and purpose. Team members and other residents at the Home celebrated these young men with a recognition ceremony on April 18.
On June 25, our RTES Youth Council hosted an educational forum about the harsh reality of human trafficking in our region. Residents organized the event themselves as part of a grant provided by Metro United Way. The forum featured presentations of advocacy work being done by the residents as well as a panel of other community organizations working to address the issue.
