AEROSPACE FUTURES ALLIANCE SPOTLIGHT
When the dust settles on the November General Election , Governor Inslee will serve a rare third term and the House of Representatives will look much like it did before November 3rd . In the State Senate , however , two defenders of our aerospace business climate — and perhaps three once mandatory , hand counts of ballots are finished — will be missing , defeated in their bids for re-election .
Is Aerospace “ Essential ” to Lawmakers in 2021 ?
The lawmakers who are returning to Olympia will face huge challenges when drafting the state budget this year . They must act to close a budget gap projected to be nearly 4.4 billion dollars through the end of the 2021-23 biennium . Doing so will require the Legislature to identify what state services are ” essential ,” what steps can be taken to reduce the cost of providing those services , and how to generate sufficient revenue .
One obvious option for new revenue is new taxes , or the repeal of long-standing tax preferences that have generated countless aerospace jobs in the state . Lawmakers will have to close the budget gap without imposing additional costs on local employers that could send a weakened economy into an even deeper downturn .
