This new virtual format has provided the AFA with a terrific opportunity to collaborate with other industry partners to host online meetings with key legislative leaders . The purpose of these meetings has been to discuss the current state of the industry , challenges we are working through and to deliver our legislative “ asks ” to our elected officials as they plan their return to Olympia in January .
We are very pleased with how these virtual events have come together and would encourage anyone interested in participating in future roundtables to make the time to do so . The virtual events are scheduled for one hour and include robust regional participation from your elected lawmakers who have been grateful for the opportunity to better understand the challenges facing the industry and to ask critical questions as they prepare themselves for what will likely be a very important 2021 legislative session .
Amidst such uncertainty , there are some things we do know ; lawmakers will face the most challenging state budget in more than a decade when they return to Olympia . They must act to close a state budget gap projected to be nearly 9 billion dollars through the end of the 2021-23 biennium , with no real confidence that the shortfall won ’ t grow worse in future forecasts . Doing so will require the Legislature to identify what state services are essential , what steps can be taken to reduce the cost of providing those services , and how to generate sufficient revenues without imposing so many additional costs on local employers that they send an already weak economy into an even deeper downturn .
