IT ’ S OK TO BE SCARED OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
BY : PAUL VAN METRE CO-FOUNDER , PROSHOP ERP
It ’ s human nature to not like change . Change makes most people feel uncomfortable . We ’ re innately wired to like things to be the same . Change brings up lots of feelings , from loss of control , uncertainty , concerns about competence , losing face with coworkers , needing to do more work and many other feelings . These are real and sometimes pretty intense feelings for people .
And the fear of change is totally justified ! The failure rate for much digital transformation is painfully high . Studies by Gartner and McKinzey put ERP failure rates at 75 % and 70 % respectively . A general search about digital transformation will show failure rates of 50-70 % are
common . These are not good numbers ! So those skeptics are well justified . In this context , one would think those early adopters are crazy !
However , feeling scared of digital transformation doesn ' t have to be a roadblock to success . With the right tools , strategies , and support , employees can be empowered to embrace technology and feel comfortable in the process , helping ensure success . The following are some tips for helping employees feel comfortable with digital transformation :
1 : EDUCATE EMPLOYEES ON WHY IT MATTERS TO YOUR COMPANY
The first step to helping employees feel comfortable with digital transformation is to educate them on the potential benefits . Taking the time to explain the positive outcomes to the company can help employees understand why it ' s important and why it ' s worth the effort . This can help employees to become more engaged and more open to the idea . Your employees care about the long-term success of your company , and it ’ s inevitable that you ’ ll have to ditch the paper sooner or later . How many successful companies today are using typewriters and carbon copy paper ? So help build the feeling that this is something that you as a team can do together to better the company for everyone ’ s long-term success .
