April 7, 2018
Bachman Lake Park, 3500 Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75220
The Oral Cancer Foundation Dallas 5K Run/Walk for Awareness
fundraiser will be on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the same location as
last year, Bachman Lake Park. For those that are not sure where to
go, we will be at the Pavilion facing Northwest Highway. Here is a
glimpse into the great things we have lined up.
SPEAKERS! Ingrid Hill will be giving us an update on the founda-
tion, and I am really looking forward to hearing some of the research
currently underway in fighting this horrible disease. She and her hus-
band Brian are the co-founders of The Oral Cancer Foundation. Ingrid
has been touched personally by oral cancer, as Brian is just beginning
his third decade as a survivor!
Two women will be speaking as spouses of long-term oral cancer sur-
vivors. One is my dear wife Susan Brown. In 2003, Susan worked in a
dental office with a hygienist named Danielle. Danielle was my hy-
gienist – and the one who prepared me for the brutality of treatment
after my oral cancer diagnosis in July 2003. Ironi-
cally, a few years later, her own husband was di-
agnosed with advanced stage oral cancer.

community news
Over the next few years, I became more active in the hygiene com-
munity and met a rep for Q-Optics named Danielle Stauffer. We
occasionally ran into each other at various events in the dental com-
munity, and on one of these occasions, in mid-conversation, Danielle
suddenly realized she knew me. Our ‘reunion’ was quite emotional.
I’m pleased to announce that Danielle Stauffer will also be sharing
her experience as the spouse of a survivor at this event. For her hus-
band Paul and me, recalling the darker days of treatment will be dif-
ficult, but it is so important for all of us to keep focused on why we
participate in walks – to raise awareness and funds so we can support
the great work being done by The Oral Cancer Foundation.
MUSIC! I’m excited that the music duo of Kaylina Chris will be
returning this year! Even at her youthful age, Kaylina is no stranger
to oral cancer. When I asked Chris, a local rockabilly performer, to
come share his beautiful voice and music with us, his first question
was to ask if his daughter Kaylina could perform, too. I later learned
Kaylina’s grandfather was also an oral cancer survivor, and her
boyfriend’s grandmother is as well.
FREE SCREENINGS! We are deeply grateful to TDHA for providing
volunteers and the free oral cancer screenings at all of our walks.
RAFFLE! Crown Design has donated a “saddle chair”, ergonomically
designed with an anatomically contoured seat for a custom fit that
helps to reduce lower back strain. We have already begun raffling
tickets for this great chair and hopefully you will have a chance at
winning this!
FAMILY FUN! As we have the last two years, we will have face paint-
ing for the children, a few people roaming around taking photos for
us, and some other surprises you will find out about when you join
us. We will be kicking off with check-in at 8:30 am and our walk starts
at 9:30 am. We are looking forward to seeing all of you!
