will cause the fly to move in an up and down motion. You can change this up to a couple of strips before the pause or a longer strip before the pause. You may need to mix it up or go through a couple of different style of retrieve before you find what is working on the lake you are on.
This brings up a subject that has been a black eye on this type of fly. I have read where this fly cannot be used do to what can only be described as misuse of it when fished. Some places have prohibited its use because of deep hook ups that results in a higher mortality of the fish. To give a brief explanation as to how this fly is misused, the angler casts the fly out and then sets the rod down, like one would do if using bait. The line will sink to the bottom and the fly will float up suspended off the bottom. When the fish takes it, it does so just about in the same manner as it would if it was bait. The hook up usually is deep in the throat, making hook removal fatal to the
fish. So to minimize that risk, keep the fly moving in some fashion or other. To ban the fly because of misuse by a few of those who don’ t, or won’ t, learn to fish it the properly seems a bit extreme. Like any fly, there is a risk that no matter how much you try not to deep hook a fish, it can happen. In that case, sacrifice the fly and cut your tippet leaving the fly in place.
