The name might be funny but“ The Booby Fly” really does work. attaching eyes to the streamer Booby patterns. As I have always said, you are only limited to what you tie by your ability and imagination. Both of the options above can always be expanded on if you choose s to do so.
Now, how is this fly used and fished? For stillwater applications, you are going to be using a sinking line. The rate of sink will be determined by how deep you plan on fishing your fly. For most of the lakes in our area, a full sinking, type 3-5 will do the trick. If you plan on fishing more shallow waters, in the 3’ to 10’ depth range a 12’-15’ type 3 tip will work just right. Lastly, don’ t forget your intermediate line when you are working shallow water( like shoreline areas).
For leader length, I have found that you do not have to go very long. A 7’ 6” leader is the longest you will need. Most of the time, I use about a 5’ leader. I will even go down to a 3’ leader in the shallow waters like lake shorelines or some of the local rivers. A lot of these factors will depend on how far off the bottom you want the fly to suspend, and / or float up from the sinking line.
To put life into the fly, a few various styles of retrieves will work. You will have to work through a few to see what the fish like that day. A slow hand twist retrieve with a short pause is a good one to start off with. This will keep the fly moving in a slow up and down motion. You will find a lot of times just as you pause you will get a strike. From there, I would move to a longer retrieve, starting with one foot strips then a short pause. This
