aggressive and hot they can get, even when
the water is still a bit frigid. They yank and
they jump.
Rick Pasquale says March is for midges on
the Mo. He’s a dry fly guy. He does not go
for that mooching stuff most people call
nymphing. It’s a great time to get away with
fishing a visible cluster midge or even a size
18 Parachute Adams. Pick a mild, cloudy,
hopefully calm afternoon and be ready to
have a blast.
February and March can offer some unique
fishing opportunities around Great Falls.
There are catchable rainbows and browns
in the runs both above and below Black
GREAT FALLS
Eagle Dam. Winter carping is also possible
at Giant Springs. If you want to get a big
pull, put in a few hours down by the park
and get ready to see your backing.
Late winter is also a great time to hit the
freestones as they begin to wake up. We
like the Sun River and Belt Creek close to
town. If you feel like venturing a bit, the
Lower Madison, Gallatin, Blackfoot or Rock
Creek can be well worth the drive. Late
winter is all about weather, but the days will
be lengthening and the opportunities will
expand. It’s a great time to go fishing.
