Nexus with 5-weight Rio Gold 186 grains /
30’ / All-around Taper
The Rio Gold is a great line if you truly
want an all-around line choice for your allaround rod. We sell more Rio Gold fly lines
than any other, so I figured it would be the
perfect line to test on the Nexus.
Whenever most anglers pick up a new rod,
they always want to get a feel for how far it
will cast. I am no exception, so I can say that
the Nexus has plenty of power to launch
a long cast. Your distance needs should
easily be within reach with this rod. At
typical trout distances of say 40’, the Nexus
is spot on. While the tip does not feel soft
when inspecting the rod, it does flex well for
shorter casts. Accuracy is important both
near and far for a good trout rod and again,
the Nexus hit the mark. Dries, nymph rigs,
and normal sized streamers all cast very
well with this conventional 5-weight line
matchup.
Nexus with 5-weight SA Sharkwave Seige
210 grains / 30’ / Aggressive Taper
The SA Sharkwave Seige is a specialty line
made for throwing large flies. It also works
well tossing indicator rigs. Out of curiosity, I
loaded up the Nexus with a huge streamer.
I’m sure tossing a 6” double articulated
Fish Skull laden creature was not what the
designers had in mind when building this
rod, but it handled it. I was actually amazed
at how easy it was to cast an 8-weight sized
fly with this 5-weight combo. The taper of
the Nexus has more reserve power than
the Winston rods I have fished in the past.
