above. It is a new urban development, a unique opportunity to get the very best out of what urban planning can do to the sustainability and liveability of a city quarter. Thanks to the phased implementation, there is an ample space for experiment, taking learnings from it to the next phase, and so continue to improve mobility concepts, much faster, more aligned and more freely, than in any of the other urban development circumstances. It offers the chance to move mobility planning from a rather reactive stance, to a proactive act. Societal trends can be anticipated and mobility concepts can live up to that, or maybe even bend them in a more desired direction. Taking this position might shape new solutions on the way. And once the‘ new Copenhagen style’ of mobility is shaping clearer in Nordhavnen, the most successful elements can be diffused over the other parts of the city and beyond.
We picture the living laboratory as an institutionalized setup. It will become obvious that in this strategy Københavns Kommune is playing the leading role of a‘ change agent’, but the rough seamans job of navigating through the strategic experimentation is not carried alone, but together with public and private partners. By testing, developing and understanding the solutions in joint effort within the live context of our city we can create innovative solutions, which will guide us in the transition towards a sustainable future. A future not only for Nordhavnen, Copenhagen and other Danish cities, but also for our global neighbours.
