EASY AS PIE:
A slice of British culture
words by sarah rowland and photography by antonio peciccia
a perfect slice of pie is crafted with a crispy crust, bursting with flavour and full of warmth from fresh ingredients. Most countries have their own variations of the very British pie.
Though British food is often thought of as uninspiring and lacking in creativity, pies are proof that the simple and understated tastes that define this cuisine are anything but boring.
Pies as we know them today hail from medieval English recipes and were once called‘ pyes’. Traditionally, they were the staple food of seamen, who craved a hearty meal that could be easily carried on long journeys.
Early recipes used simply flour and water to create a pastry-like crust, while various meats and seasonal vegetables created the filling.
Today, these savoury pies have gained global popularity, standing as a testament to British culture and a great example of traditional English cuisine.
