Local 227 collected more than 20,000 pounds of supplies to help Baton Rouge officers who lost their homes in the August flood. with more than 3,000 pounds of supplies have been sent so far.) Well, it all comes back to Baton Rouge. The fact that Novalis brought up the idea to take up the collection for officers who were flood victims came on a Monday afternoon, and by Saturday the Local was filling a 26-foot truck, illustrates the power of what Colligan describes as, “determined members putting their heads together and doing something right.” A lot of word of mouth, a little contact through social media and the devotion of the members brought out more than 400 residents to fill the truck in less than seven hours. So how do they do what they do? “Well, first it’s because Jesse is our ring leader. He’s brought so many great ideas to the members that they are more than willing to jump on board and do whatever we ask,” Franco explains. “You also have to understand we have a very unique group of guys. They are guys who grew up in this town. They went to school together. They played ball together. We hang out together, and that’s why we all wanted to come to the Valor Awards. We knew it would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” d www.njcopsmagazine.com ■ DECEMBER 2016 43
