CONTINUED FROM PAGE 69 Once you have your equipment in place, are you doing certain things like researching the spot where you are going? Have you reached out to the local police or used Google Maps to scout the facility or destination that you are going to? Once you arrive and your family is seated, tell them that you will be right back and go check any exits for yourself if necessary, or find a safe area where you can meet in case of an emergency. Obviously, we need to get home not only after work but also after any type of outing. Just keep in mind that if we are out in society alone – let’s say working out or training – we still need to pay attention to the general area. Do you have headphones on loud? Are you keeping your eyes focused in all areas while training? I know these are just general questions, but we never want to let others in our area without seeing or noticing them. You may think I am nuts, but the next time you see me, ask about the life I saved in Disney World, or the assault I prevented locally while I was training. Stay Dangerous! d Bill Fearon is a 20-year New Jersey State Trooper and Lead Instructor at the Woodland Park Range.
