In His Own Words Mike Kaniuk shares his thoughts about how he will serve members as a PFRS Trustee: I try to be fair and consistent. If you’re wrong, you’re wrong. You own it, you learn from it and you move on. If you’re right and wrongfully accused, I will stand behind you 110 percent. No matter how many times you’re asked a question, answer it the same way no matter the mood you’re in and no matter how stressful the situation. It’s all about being respectful to your people. The way I feel as a union leader is that we’re better off getting along in the climate we’re in. Being around for so long, that’s part of what you learn: to adapt to each different situation. Certain situations, you go to the wall. Other situations, you tread lightly. To me, it’s a very important job because your pensions is your end goal. The first goal is to come home at the end of the day. We all strive for that – to get home safe and to get your pension at the end. I’ve been going to PFRS meetings the past couple years, and I’ve heard the stories. I want to be part of that decision-making and help enlighten people that don’t know about corrections what I’ve learned the past 24 years. Watching people go home to their families at the end of the day safe and sound is why I do this. If they get home every day, that makes my job worth it. www.njcopsmagazine.com ■ MAY 2015 32
