Polar Bear Plunge 2017 for Special Olympics
Good to the last plunge
With apologies to the members of Guttenberg Local 88, the Polar Bear Plunge doesn’ t officially end until Toms River Local 137 takes its last dip in the ocean.
“ I just came back from my sixth time in,” Local 137 Executive Board Member Bill Hutton extolled.“ Why not? When somebody says,‘ Hey, jump in with me,’ I go.”
Dedication underlines Local 137’ s participation in the plunge. The Toms River contingent included 24 plungers who gathered at 8 a. m. to begin preparation. Among them were dispatchers and supervisors, but also some young members who went out of their way to be here.
“ A lot of our young guys actually switched for Christmas,” Hutton explained.“ The guys who don’ t have kids, they switched with older guys to do this today. I have to give them credit for showing dedication and compassion. They’ re giving up Christmas day on a regularly scheduled day off so they can be here today.”
If the sun had shined a little brighter, Local 137 members probably would have set up lounge chairs and turned the plunge into a full day at the beach. Still, they saw it through to the end because of their dedication.
“ We fundraise throughout the year to be here,” Hutton said.“ It’ s important. I have two kids that are healthy, and we want everybody to understand that’ s it’ s important.” d
