Neptune Local
‘Pounds the Pavement’
Approximately 10 officers from Neptune Township Local 74
took off their duty belts and laced up running shoes for a charity 5K in October.
The Local raised more than $500 by competing in “Pound
the Pavement,” a run/walk event raising money for cancer research.
Although some Local 74 members of Neptune’s officers are
regular runners, at least a few of the rest “probably hadn’t run
since their last foot chase,” Local 74 President Thomas Claffey
joked.
The run benefitted the Lustgarten Foundation, a nonprofit
dedicated to advancing scientific and medical research related
to pancreatic cancer. Claffey said the event, which had runners
and walkers trot through Neptune’s west side neighborhoods,
is the latest in the Local’s efforts to get more involved with the
community.
This year marked the third annual Pound the Pavement run,
but the first time the Local participated as a group, Claffey said.
He added that the decision to run was made at the last minute. But the event was rewarding enough for Local members to
want to run again, he said.
“I’m sure we’re going to do it every year,” Claffey said. d
