Berkeley Heights hosts
6th annual trunk-or-treat
Halloween came early to Berkeley Heights this year, when
nearly 100 children came out to Berkeley Heights Local 144’s
sixth annual trunk-or-treat on Oct. 28.
The event was started in 2012 by by Officer Jean Marie Mocar-
ski and Detective Trent Frettes just after Hurricane Sandy, when
power loss, downed utility lines and fallen trees made trick-or-
treating through the neighborhoods unsafe and impractical.
The ice storm in 2011 had also made trick-or-treating impos-
sible.
Although Berkeley Heights children have had the opportuni-
ty to go trick-or-treating on Halloween in subsequent years, the
trunk-or-treat has become a tradition. This year, approximately
100 car trunks were open as the vehicle owners handed out can-
dy in the municipal parking lot.
The event’s founders say they are happy to provide a safe
place for Berkeley Heights children to celebrate the holiday, as
well as a chance to meet the PBA members who serve their com-
munity. d
Event chair Jean Marie Mocarski, Vice President Trent Fettes and President
Ed Gaffney of Berkeley Heights Local 144 give out treats and safety reflec-
tive items.
