HEALTH & WELLNESS Treat sleep apnea before surgery

Obstructive sleep apnea affects a third of the adult population and is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. When the throat muscles relax during sleep, the soft palate, the uvula and the soft tissues around the tonsils collapse, obstructing breathing. This is a chronic life-threatening situation that prevents oxygenation, causing sleep deprivation and other complications.
Identifying and managing obstructive sleep apnea – as an alternative to surgery – improves airway function, which decreases healing time, promotes healing and helps minimize the risk of respiratory depression, from both general anesthesia and the opioids that are given to minimize postoperative pain. The time between the preoperative evaluation for surgery and the surgery itself is an excellent time to take care of sleep apnea: get diagnosed through a sleep study, and start treatment with a PAP( positive air pressure) machine or an oral appliance.
It is best to prepare your body preoperatively to increase healing, decrease inflammation, increase oxygenation and improve circulation. Obstructive sleep apnea causes intermittent hypoxia( decreased oxygenation), which causes endothelial dysfunction( the endothelial tissues line the blood vessels) and increased total body inflammation.
Sleep apnea is also associated with hypertension, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, renal( kidney) disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, daytime fatigue, attention problems and weight gain. Sleep apnea is also responsible for metabolic syndrome, which is linked to a higher risk of heart disease, increased blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, higher blood glucose levels and an increased waistline.
By treating sleep apnea prior to surgery, you will minimize postsurgical stress and help your body’ s healing process. d
