Verona Local 72, with the help of eight other state
and local law enforcement agencies, created an ap-
preciation sensation for local fifth graders.
Verona Police Department Law Enforcement Ap-
preciation Day 2018 provided students in fifth-grade
social studies classes with an action-packed day
that featured the NJ State Police helicopter flying
in, a series of K9 demonstrations, a tour of motors
units, a look at a mobile command vehicle and some
evidence-collecting technology.
Held on June 12 at Henry B. Whitehorne Middle
School in Verona, the event is nicknamed “Police
Day.” The day marks the end of a series of classroom
sessions led by Verona Local 72 members through-
out May. Officer-led instruction included the dan-
gers of tobacco use, alcohol use, drug use and so-
cial media, as well lessons in peer pressure, making
good decisions and school safety.
Supporting agencies helping with Verona’s Law
Enforcement Appreciation day included the New
Jersey State Police Troop B Totowa Barracks, the New
Jersey State Police Aviation Unit, the Montclair State
University Police Campus Police K9 Unit, the Essex
County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division, the Essex
County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit, the Newark Police
Mounted Unit, the Newark Police Motor Unit and
the North Caldwell Police Department
“On behalf of the Verona Police Department, we
would like to express our thanks and gratitude to the
Whitehorne Middle School staff for their assistance
and participation,” said Local 72 member Detective
Joel A. Martin, the event founder and coordinator.
