highly experienced PBA mem-
bers. They basically continued
where President Colligan left off:
What mailing companies have
been successful; what law and accounting firms to use and
what firms not to use, etc. These were the tools necessary to
make us, as the newly elected board for Local 133, educated
and successful.
I’ll always remember one of the takeaways of the class: “Pay
yourselves first.” A seemingly easy philosophy to take back to
the Local; however, it was a relatively new philosophy to pres-
ent to our members. We had been so generous to our commu-
nity and its various youth programs, but realistically, we need-
ed to buckle down and seriously consider what and where we
were spending our support.
Every Local will have to endure multiple legal and account-
ing fees, but we had historically sponsored multiple youth
sporting teams and made considerable contributions to our
local schools and scouting programs.
We followed the advice from President Colligan and suc-
cessfully raised our Local dues. We began to follow the Local
by-laws to the letter. We made the necessary modifications to
the by-laws and brought them up to the current required for-
mat. We made a commitment to save money to build up our
struggling financial accounts while still supporting our local
nonprofits.
Quite simply, as an organization, we continued to support
these local organizations, but on a much smaller and more eco-
nomical scale. We sponsored one local youth baseball team in-
stead of two. We sponsored one local Boy Scout troop instead of
two. We made major cutbacks in our good and welfare budget
until we are back on our feet again financially.
