Matawan and Aberdeen Locals bowled over
On June 10, members of Matawan Lo-
cal 179 and Aberdeen Local 163 laced up
their bowling shoes and polished their
bowling balls to participate in the first
“Bowl with a Cop.”
Organized by Local 179 member Chris-
tine Hippel, Bowl with a Cop brought to-
gether members of law enforcement and
children with special needs at Strath-
more Lanes in Aberdeen.
“I organized the event to let special
needs kids meet other special needs kids
and give the parents a well-deserved
break,” Hippel explained.
After the success of Local 179’s “Cookie
with a Cop” event, which also included
special needs children, Hippel reached
out to a local group called Parents of Spe-
cial People to see if they would be inter-
ested in partnering up again.
“I love to bowl, so after the success of
Cookie with a Cop, I reached out to them
and they loved the idea,” Hippel said.
Hippel was able to involve several oth-
er Locals, including Hazlet Local 189,
Linden Local 42, East Brunswick Local
145, Hillside Township Local 70 and Es-
sex County Sheriff’s Local 183. Members
of the Matawan Fire Department and
the First Aid Squad also attended to bowl
with the children and allow them to take
tours of their fire trucks and ambulances.
To celebrate several rounds of suc-
cessful bowling, Hippel had T-shirts and
medals made and distributed to each
child at the end of the afternoon.
“The event was amazing,” Hippel
said. “It actually went a lot better than
I thought it would, and we had such a
great turnout.” d
