818 | Mark 6:39
When they found out, they said, “Five — a nd
two fish.”
39 Then Jesus directe d them to have all the
people sit down in g roups on the g reen g rass.
40 So they sat down in g roups of hund reds and
fift ies. 41 Taki ng the five loaves and the two
fish and looki ng up to heaven, he gave t hanks
and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his
disc iples to dist ribute to the people. He also
div ided the two fish a mong them all. 42 They
all ate and were satisf ied, 43 and the disciples
picked up t welve basketf uls of broken pieces of
bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who
had eaten was five thousand.
Jesus Walks on the Water
45 Immed iatel y Jesus made his disc iples get
into the boat and go on a head of him to Beth
saida, w hile he dism issed the c rowd. 46 After
leavi ng them, he went up on a mount ainside
to pray.
47 Later that night, the boat was in the mid
dle of the lake, and he was a lone on land. 48 He
saw the disciples straini ng at the oars, because
the wind was a gainst them. Shortl y before
dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake.
He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they
saw him walki ng on the lake, they t hought he
was a g host. They cried out, 50 because they all
saw him and were terr if ied.
Immed iatel y he spoke to them and said,
“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be a fraid.” 51 Then
he c limbed into the boat with them, and
the wind died down. They were completel y
a mazed, 52 for they had not understood about
the loaves; t heir hearts were hardened.
53 When they had c rossed over, they landed
at Gennesa ret and anchored t here. 54 As soon
as they got out of the boat, people recogn ized
Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole reg ion
and carr ied the sick on mats to wherever they
heard he was. 56 And wherever he went — i nto
villages, towns or count ryside — t hey placed
the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him
to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,
and all who touched it were healed.
That Which Defiles
7
The Phari sees and some of the teachers
of the law who had come from Jer usalem
gathered a round Jesus 2 and saw some of his
disciples eati ng food with hands that were de
filed, that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and
all the Jews do not eat unless they give t heir
a 4
hands a ceremon ia l washi ng, holdi ng to the
trad it ion of the elders. 4 When they come from
the marketplace they do not eat unless they
wash. And they observe many other trad it ions,
such as the washi ng of cups, pitchers and ket
tles. a )
5 So the Phari s ees and teachers of the law
asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live ac
cordi ng to the trad it ion of the elders instead of
eati ng t heir food with def iled hands?”
6 He rep lied, “Isai ah was r ight when he
prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is writ
ten:
“ ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human
rules.’ b
8 You
have let go of the commands of God and
are holdi ng on to human trad it ions.”
9 And he cont inued, “You have a fine way of
sett ing a side the commands of God in order
to observe c your own trad it ions! 10 For Moses
said, ‘Honor your fat her and mother,’ d and,
‘Anyone who curses t heir fat her or mother is
to be put to death.’ e 11 But you say that if any
one declares that what m ight have been used
to help t heir fat her or mother is Corban (that
is, devoted to God) — 12 then you no longer let
them do anyt hing for t heir fat her or mother.
13 Thus you null if y the word of God by your tra
dit ion that you have handed down. And you do
many t hings like that.”
14 Again Jesus c alled the c rowd to him and
said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand
this. 15 Nothi ng outs ide a pers on can def ile
them by goi ng into them. Rather, it is what
comes out of a person that def iles them.” [16] f
17 Aft er he had left the c rowd and ent ered
the house, his disciples asked him about this
parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t
you see that nothi ng that enters a person from
the outside can def ile them? 19 For it doesn’t
go into their heart but into their stomach, and
then out of the body.” (In sayi ng this, Jesus de
clared all f oods clean.)
20 He went on: “What comes out of a person
is what def iles them. 21 For it is from within, out
of a person’s heart, that evil t houghts come —
sexua l immoralit y, t heft, murder, 22 adultery,
g reed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander,
arrog ance and foll y. 23 All t hese e vils come
from inside and def ile a person.”
