Ngaruawahia High School Kapa Haka USA Tour 1998 - Page 63 Richard and Sandy went shopping in the mall across from Temple Square, where Richard ran into the conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The conductor had already heard excellent reports of the group’s performance at the Returned Missionary’s Reunion the previous evening – word gets around fast in the city! Sandy checked out the Deseret Book Store in the mall (a predominantly religious outlet) and ear-marked a number of items that he planned to buy on Monday – items not readily available at home. In the chapel beside the culture hall where the group attended the Kiwi Gold & Green dance was a stained glass window that was over 140 years old. When the Latter-day Saint pioneers arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley they constructed their first chapel on this same spot and brought in the materials with which to construct this window, called “Joseph’s First Vision”. The original chapel was replaced by the current building complex and the window was retained and later covered over from the outside to preserve it. It is back-lit so that those attending the regular meetings in the chapel can view it. The window is over six meters high. Brian Layton was able to turn on the back-lighting for us so that some members of the group could see the effect.
