The Grand Canyon region forms a huge area of dissected
plateaus, separated by innumerable canyons and steepsided chasms. Numerous side canyons which carry tributaries of the Colorado, open onto the main canyon. The side
canyons are in turn cut by smaller ravines and gorges. In
the main canyon are isolated pinnacles of rock, known as
buttes.
The walls of the buttes and canyons are exposed as multihued strata, or layers of rock. The bands of colour of the
rock formations seem to change as the intensity and angle
of sunlight change.
