Page 146 - Ngaruawahia High School Kapa Haka USA Tour 1998 GRAND CANYON Grand Canyon is an immense canyon on the upper course of the Colorado River, in north-western Arizona. It is known as one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. About half of the total length of the canyon lies in Grand Canyon National Park. The canyon winds through a region of high plateaus for a total distance of 217 miles (350 km). It is an extremely broad canyon and, from rim to rim varies in width from 4 miles (6.4 km) to as much as 18 miles (29 km). At the canyon's deepest point the Colorado River lies about I mile (1.6 km) below the general level of the plateaus. The North Rim is about I,000 feet (300 meters) higher than the South Rim. The walls of the canyon are generally steep, but not vertical. However, in some places there is a sheer drop of I,000 or more feet.
