An unsympathetic teacher…..
T
his year our Year 12 Physical
Education class was given an
amazing opportunity to attend the
Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor
Pursuits Centre thanks to the
generosity of the Per ry’s
Foundation.
Perry’s contribution was well
spent as our students developed
character and values that can be
difficult to achieve within a
classroom setting.
The outdoors can be a very
unsympathetic teacher if you do
show it some respect.
The student’s preparation
consisted of collecting suitable
individual and group gear to keep
them comfortable and safe on Mt
Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and
Tongariro.
Learning to read maps and
navigating through trying
conditions and choosing food that
was not only light weight but full
of essential nutrients was a
component of the camp.
Once ready the
students began
their
journey from Turoa Ski field and
endeavoured to finish at the
Ketetahi Springs which is 70km
away and on the opposite end of
the mountains.
Seven students completed the
trip successfully with three being
driven out due to minor injury and
sickness.
Six hours a day of tramping
and camping sometimes during
minor blizzard conditions made up
the majority of the camp.
The students earned 10 credits
