At this camp we were all
put through something we really did not
want to experience. For some of us it was
just being there in the first place!
We had been told it was low-tech, but no
one suspected what it really was.
The only signs of civilization were a few
‘dunnies’ and a car (which we all helped to
unload).
Then they split us into four teams with
seniors as team leaders and then redivided
into threes for tent assignments.
At first we got involved in some teambuilding routines such as passing a ball to
someone and calling out their name.
Then there were some trust-building
activities like falling backwards onto a
partner, or even trusting classmates to stop
you hitting the ground after falling
backwards (or forwards) off a log.
In the evening some students decided to
climb up the huge hill outside the camp and
I was one of them (even though I am afraid
of heights and the pathway to the top was
slippery!).
The sunset at the top was beautiful and
were thankful to Miss Gabel for allowing us
to go up.
The next day, after a rough sleep, we
embarked on a huge scavenger hunt and
cross-country. I can’t really remember the
details but I do remember that the
challenges were rough, tough and muddy!
The disappointing part was to discover that
all of our work had only put us in second
place!
Overall the camp was pretty awesome,
and if I had to do it all over again it won’t be
so bad!
A tip to anyone going on such a camp
as this - bring a sleeping bag with a thick
bottom!
