AMO “Papa tu a nuku” (left) This amo represents Papa tu a nuku, the Earth Mother, after her separation from Rangi nui the Sky Father. She is upside down to depict the turmoil of their tearing apart and the tears show her grief at the separation. They also represent the waters that cover our earth, and therefore links with the name of this wharenui. “Rangi nui” (right) This amo represents Rangi nui the Sky Father after his separation from Papa tu a nuku. He is depicted here twisted in the agony of the separation and casting his eyes forlornly to Papa tu a nuku. PARE KUAHA Tane Nui A Rangi Tane was said to be the first born of Rangi and Papa. He was the god of forests and all its trees, plants, birds and animals. He was credited with creating the first woman out of earth and calling her Hine Ahu One. They had a number of children whose descendants became the human race.
