This is the reason why I think it is truly a Utopia.” OCTOBER 2016 | 07 Did anyone know that there is actually a secret garden here on campus? A place where not only we students enjoy, but also supports various living organisms. That’s the Eco-garden. It's located next to the Education University of Hong Kong HSBC Early Childhood Learning Centre and the Jockey Club Student Quarters. Therefore, you can always find little kids playing right there. You might be wondering why it is called an ‘Eco-garden’. It’s not a natural urban park you could see anywhere. Sustainability elements have been inserted meticulously in the design of this newly built secret garden, such as some renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines. It is also known as a butterfly garden and is designed with the needs of butterflies, namely host plants and nectar plants. Furthermore, there are areas for organic agriculture or planting of various herbs which are comparatively new concepts when comparing with traditional gardening plants. You can find two ponds in the garden, which can support numerous aquatic fauna, insects such as dragonflies or damselflies, and amphibians. These habitats are built in attracting different wildlife species. All in all, Eco-garden is a wonderful place for you and me, and the organisms as well. This is the reason why I think it is truly a Utopia. If you have got some spare time, feel free to take a few minutes walk there and you will probably discover creatures far beyond your expectation. Finally, if you are interested in knowing more or work on biodiversity conservation, please feel free to contact me.
