Here are some of the ways the Park District strives to keep the community safe .
STRIKEGUARD
What is your favorite thing about working with the Glenview Park District ? My favorite thing about the Park District is the variety of what we offer . For example , our safety and risk management practices at Historic Wagner Farm are very different than risk management principles for the Glenview Community Ice Center . There is always something to learn , expand and enhance with our risk management program .
How do you stay on top of the latest safety trends and guidelines ? In order to stay current on safety trends and guidelines , I am involved with a handful of networks and resources . Since 2022 , I have been the committee chair for the Illinois Park and Recreation Association Risk Manager Committee . I am also involved in our Park District Risk Management Agency ( PDRMA ) which offers risk management consulting and various trainings designed for park districts . I have been an active member on PDRMA ’ s Education and Training Committee since 2018 , where we discuss developing training programs for the membership based on current needs and trends throughout the field .
What ’ s a memorable safety initiative you ’ ve led at the park district ? My most memorable safety initiatives always involve training . I enjoy bringing a new safetyrelated training to the Park District and uniting staff for a few hours to teach them a topic that is beneficial or helpful to them . Over the last year , I introduced new Stop the Bleed training and Mental Health First Aid training to the District , which I plan on continuing in the future .
Have you ever heard a siren in our parks that sounded different that the outdoor emergency weather siren ? The Glenview Park District uses the Strikeguard Detection System at select parks and facilities to warn park users of detected thunder or lightning within five miles of their area . Even though the warning system is designed to be proactive , neither the system or signal is intended to guarantee that conditions are safe .
The alarm will sound one long 15-second warning siren and the base station has a strobe light that will flash when it ’ s activated , meaning outside activities should be suspended . When the alarm sounds again , multiple short blasts , outdoor activities may resume .
We currently have Strikeguard systems at Flick Pool / Park , Glenview Park Golf Club , The Grove , Westbrook School , Park Center , Community Park West , Gallery Park , Glenview Prairie Club , Crowley Park , Roosevelt Pool / Park , Swenson Park , Glenview Tennis Club , Cole Park , Johns Park and Willow Park .
SAFETY TEAM
The Park District values safety as one of our guiding principles of the Glenview Park District . The District created a Safety Team that is comprised of at least one full-time staff member of each facility . The team meets on a monthly basis to discuss accident / incident trends , risk management goals for the District , conduct facility inspections and share safety updates from each department . Recently , the Safety Team has conducted a slip , trip and fall assessment of every facility , hosted a chainsaw safety course for The Grove staff , introduced Stop the Bleed training , performed injury prevention job task assessments , hosted OSHA compliant training , updated our confined space inventory program and collaborated with the district environmental team to create a chemical disposal program .
