Parks are often the heart of a community , providing spaces for recreation , relaxation , and connection with nature . Here in Glenview , two of our oldest parks — Sleepy Hollow Park and Diederich Park — have been cherished destinations for residents for decades . Through their expansions , renovations , and various features , both parks have adapted to the changing needs of residents while preserving their rich histories . As Glenview continues to grow , these parks will remain vital gathering places , ensuring that the legacy of community spirit endures for generations to come .
SLEEPY HOLLOW PARK
Nestled at 1821 Maplewood Lane , Sleepy Hollow Park was the second park acquired by the Glenview Park District , with its original 2.5 acres purchased in June 1931 . This initial acquisition marked the beginning of a significant legacy , as it laid the groundwork for future expansions and community enhancements .
In 1959 , the park saw a major expansion when an additional 5 acres were purchased , increasing its total size to 7.5 acres . This expansion was made possible through the proceeds of a $ 450,000 bond issue passed in 1958 , demonstrating the community ’ s commitment to improving recreational facilities .
A notable feature of Sleepy Hollow Park was its log cabin , which was built in the 1960s . Unfortunately , this original structure was lost to a fire . The fieldhouse that is now located in its place was built in 1980 . The park also features a pedestrian bridge that spans the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River , originally built prior to 1970 and later replaced in 1993 after undergoing various repairs .
The park has evolved significantly over the years . In the 1960s , it became the site of the first Park District camp , a testament to its role in fostering community engagement and recreation . Further enhancements included general security lighting added in 1970 and a major renovation of the playground in 2002 as part of the Park District ’ s capital replacement program .
Today , Sleepy Hollow Park remains a beloved destination for Glenview residents . Its amenities , which include a baseball field , playground , fieldhouse , and picnic areas , provide ample opportunities for outdoor activities and social gatherings . The park ’ s nature trails invite visitors to explore the scenic beauty of the area , making it an ideal location for both relaxation and recreation .
