New Central Parkway Bridge Planned

$ 225K GRANT AWARDED TO PARK DISTRICT

In March , the Park District submitted for a new grant opportunity called “ Invest in Cook ” for financial support of the replacement of Central Parkway Bridge . The original pedestrian bridge was installed in October 1963 to provide recreational opportunities to residents near what was then named Riverside Park .
The bridge spans from Central Parkway ( Raleigh Road ) over the West Fork North Branch of the Chicago River and gives residents living east of the river and south of Glenview Road access to Judy Beck Park . This bridge is the only location that provides a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly crossing within a half mile of homes for an estimated 1,300 residents . The project will replace this 91-foot-long bridge that was constructed through a renewing intergovernmental agreement between the Village of Glenview and the Park District , in which the Park District built and maintains the bridge that is on Village property . The new bridge will be both wider and longer than the existing bridge , and better able to accommodate walkers , joggers and bikers . It will also include wider handrails and a more aesthetic railing design , which will beautify this focal point where residents can enjoy the surrounding nature . continued on page 2
