IT REFLECTIONS

My view of Hong Kong has changed tremendously since my first day at EdUHK. During this academic year, I got to experience this city as a vibrant cultural hub full of contrasts, local traditions and scenic nature. Living in an international environment has challenged my values and taught me a lot both about myself and the amazing people I have been working with. I am grateful for the long hours spent talking to students during English consultations, English Café, and different university events, as they gave me a chance to learn about Hong Kong and China in a way books would never allow me to. Perhaps the most memorable experience from these ten months was one of my English consultations, when a student brought a poetic letter written to his yet unborn daughter. This letter holds a special place in my heart, not only for its simple and unspoken beauty, but also for its impactful lesson on love and family values that got me closer to understanding local culture.
Working as an International Tutor has been absolutely incredible so far! I encounter students from different backgrounds, representing a variety of races, ethnicities, religions, ages, and socio-economic status. They are not only from Hong Kong and China but also from different parts of the world. This diversity has exposed me to various cultures, world views, perspectives, opinions, values and beliefs that have affirmed my values as well as challenged them. Therefore, this interaction with diverse individuals has brought new opportunities to learn on a daily basis, which is what I enjoy the most about this job. Thanks to our local students, I gained a deeper understanding of the culture and landscape of Hong Kong!

I’ m glad to have had the opportunity to be an International Tutor this year. It has been an enjoyable experience and one that differs greatly from all of the experiences I’ ve had in the area of education thus far. Working in Hong Kong has been a bit of a challenge, which is always more than welcome. Overcoming these challenges has made me better at what I aim to do in the future. My favorite experience was being able to share different kinds of cultural experiences with the students here, such as the Greek-themed event we held and my African Awareness Workshops.
