Curfew-like restrictions in Valley on death anniversary of Guru
SRINAGAR: Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in most parts of Kashmir Valley on Sunday to avert any law and order problem on the first death anniversary of Parliament attackconvict Mohammad Afzal Guru. Guru was hanged inside New Delhi's Tihar Jail on February 9 last year. A large contingent of police and paramilitary forces were deployed at various spots across the Srinagar city. Officials said restrictions were put in place in order to thwart any possible protests and rallies planned by various separatist groups.
Section 144 of CrPC, which bans assembly of four or more people, was imposed in several districts, including Srinagar, sources said, adding that the situation has so far been peaceful with no reports of any untoward incident in the Valley.
Mobile internet services were also snapped in the Valley as part of the precautionary measures although broadband connections through landline phones were functioning as usual. The authorities snapped the services since last night to avoid the spreading of rumours through social networking, official sources said. Separatists had given a call for a three-day shutdown till February 11, which marks the death anniversary of JKLF founder Mohd Maqbool Bhat. Bhat was hanged and buried inside Tihar Jail 20 years ago.
