The town of Newport was created after the Normans conquered Gwent in 1093. In the early 12th century they built a castle by a ford in the river Usk.
This led to the growth of a little town by the castle. In the Middle Ages it was common for towns to appear by castles as the garrisons often provided a market for the townspeople's to sell and buy their goods. Weekly markets would begin in the town and people would come from the surrounding countryside to buy and sell.
The little town of Newport only had a population of a few hundred. Compared to now this would seem tiny but settlements were very small in those days. Furthermore Welsh towns were very small compared to many English towns.
The Transporter Bridge - Opened in 1906 to provide a crossing between the east and west banks of the river Usk. This allowed people to cross the river without obstructing shipping.
It is believed to be one of only five other bridges like this in the world.
Newport has changed alot since days of old, but still keeps its character.
There are so many beautiful things to see in Newport, from the Riverfront at night to Bellevue Park in the day. Newport has something for everyone.
It is also well known for sports and leisure, with Rodney Parade on its doorstep hosting matches of home team 'Newport Dragons' and much more, this is a wonderful venue.
The Celtic Manor, although a fantastic golf venue and hotel/spa, also has amazing business and conference facilities, not to mention a perfect venue for a beautiful and memorable wedding day.
Newport has so much to offer and it will soon have alot more. The welsh assembly, in partnership with the local authority and other organisations will soon redevelop most of the riverfront, bringing more shops, jobs and beauty to the local area.
