Temporary housing in Newport is provided by the Navy and Salve Regina University, both which bring individuals to
Newport on a temporary basis for varying amounts of time. The Navy is one of the largest populations for rental
housing. Navy personnel may live on base or in one of the Naval Station Newport (NAVASTA) military communities in
Aquidneck Island, which has some communities in Newport. It is not presently known how many Navy personnel
chose to live on base versus off base or how many of the off base residents reside in the City of Newport versus other
cities on Aquidneck Island.
Salve Regina also brings in a population looking to rent homes and apartments nearby the university. Fall 2015
enrollment was 2,758 with 2,158 undergraduates and 600 graduate students. The university provides four residence
halls for underclassmen, accommodating both freshman and sophomore students. There are 12 university owned
houses that provide housing for upperclassman in Newport. Together, these houses accommodate over 200 students.
In total, 60% of the undergraduate student body lives on campus at Salve Regina. It is not presently known how many
of the remaining students chose to rent housing in Newport versus other cities on Aquidneck Island.
Household Income
Overall, the City of Newport has a greater median household income with included benefits than the State of Rhode
Island as a whole. Table 5-7 shows more than 17% of Newport’s households made between $100,000 and
$149,999—a higher percentage than all other income ranges. Compared to the State of Rhode Island as a whole,
Newport had a higher percentage of households make $75,000 and over annually. Map 5-5 shows income regarding
to the median income of the citizens of Newport.
