FOREWORD
The Age of Urban Mining
So, the Internet has grown by a factor of 100 during the past decade. And according to reports, around three billion new consumers
are expected to enter global markets in the next ten to fifteen years. That means demand for infrastructure and technology, demand
for more metals and increasing data centre capacity. Set against a background of rising energy costs and growing green legislation,
nobody really knows how we will supply that demand. For many businesses, the concept of a circular economy requires a shift in
production models and a shift in thinking. In addition to more recycling, businesses would need to be more structured around services
and product upgrades, coupled with a more efficient approach to energy and resources. Unlocking the potential of discarded cable
and other metals found in offices or locked up in landfill could be essential in maintaining a competitive advantage.
