D URING THE HOME DESIGN PROCESS OF THIS recently completed summer home , the southern Maine coastline acted as a refreshing backdrop for Blakely Interior Design . The clients , who had been summering in Ogunquit for years , engaged Blakely during the architectural phase and initially asked them to only design the living room and primary suite . However , the clients and interior design team became such good partners that by the end of the project , they had designed every room throughout the interior .
Working alongside Lindsey Architects and Maine Coast Builders , the mission was to create a beautiful vacation home for the whole family to enjoy — the clients would be regularly joined by their adult children and their spouses , grandchildren and pets . Every element of the interior was thought out to tell the story of a quintessential New England summer by the beach .
“ To create truly personal interiors , it always starts with listening really well . We listened to their goals and asked a lot of intentional questions that led to designed spaces that met their needs both functionally and aesthetically ,” says Janelle Blakely , principal and owner of Blakely Interior Design . “ They desired an open main level where everyone could casually gather at once , so we used that as inspiration when developing the space plans .”
The layout for this family summer home is quite different than most . The first floor contains four bedrooms , a laundry room and gym . The main living area on the second floor opens up to a chef ’ s kitchen , walkin pantry , powder room , dining room and breakfast nook . The wine room is another notable room on the second floor , and the deck just outside the dining room leads to the third-floor deck via an iron spiral staircase .
