As the main source of water , the Nile was an important part of Egyptian daily life . The Nile was used to irrigate fields , transport goods , and as a source of mud . Mud from the Nile was used to make ceramic ware and clay containers . These containers could then be used to store crops and food . The ceramic ware could be used to cook , as well . While most Egyptians were farmers , some built temples to honor the deities . Egyptians explained daily happenings through religion . They had deities for things like the sun rising and the Nile flooding . In total , there were over 2,000 deities . Geb was the Egyptian god of the Earth . His laughter created earthquakes , and he oversaw the growing of crops . People would worship both in temples and at home . Another prominent job in Egypt was being a scribe . They were considered important since they were some of the only people who knew how to read and write .
