Diet , like everything else , was dependent on one ’ s economic status . The average Roman ate one main meal in the late afternoon with light snacks as morning and evening meals consisting mostly of cereals , bread , and vegetables because meat was too expensive for the average citizen . The wealthy were able to indulge in imported spices and meats daily . Work was generally reserved for the morning , starting at dawn and ending at noon , while the evenings were for leisure including but not limited to gladiator fights , chariot races , and theater performances . At the end of the day , many men went to the baths to both socialize and occasionally conduct business . Emperors would often build baths to gain favor with their citizens . Baths would usually consist of three rooms : tepidarium , caldarium , and frigidarium . These baths were typically cheap to use , and slaves maintained the heat in the different temperature rooms . Roman citizens lived different lives based on their level of wealth . While the rich lived luxurious lives with the aid of slaves and the comfort granted to them because of their wealth .
