This seven stringer , usually made of bronze and sheep gut , was popular among male citizens of the upper class . This tells us a lot about the values of the ancient civilization ; their citizens loved entertainment and the modern equivalent of the humanities . They valued a “ well-rounded education .” In Greece , the prevalence of wealthy male musicians demonstrates how many forms of art were largely reserved for men of an elite economic status . The lyre and the civilization ’ s emphasis on music and entertainment surely weren ' t the only contributions of the ancient Greeks that are relevant to the modern world , but , for me , I find them some of the most interesting . Their continued modern use shows just how easily the good qualities of the classical civilizations can seep into our everyday lives and just how easily we may fail to recognize the effect these ancient activities have had on us .
