While they usually sacrificed felons , innocents were sacrificed if there weren ' t enough criminals . There was quite a bit of overlap between the Gallic and Roman gods . Like the Romans , the Gauls worshipped Apollo , Mars , Jupiter , and Minerva . However , Mercury and Pluto were their chief gods , not Jupiter . They believed that Pluto was their divine ancestor , and to honor him , they measured time by the number of nights , instead of days . Education was another major facet of Gallic society , especially for the Druids . In fact , it was so important that the Druids were not required to serve in the military . Students trained for 20 years , and typical fields of study included poetry , astronomy , geography , the natural sciences , and religion , with an emphasis on reincarnation . Interestingly enough , because it was illegal to write any of the Druids ’ lessons down , students had to learn all of this information through memorization only .
