SECONDARY MATH FALL NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2015 NCCTM Secondary Math DPI Sessions DISTRICT COORDINATORS District Coordinators: K-12 Collaboration Session (90 minute session) Jennifer Curtis Thursday 12:30-2:00 in Auditorium III This is a network and sharing session specifically for district level coordinators. Coordinators will collaborate on current work at the state level and discuss possible next steps. Principles to Actions DPI Sessions Principles to Actions: Ensuring Math Success for All High School: Joseph Reaper, Lisa Ashe, and Chase Tuttle Thursday, 2:30-4:00 in Auditorium III Grades 6-8: Lisa Ashe, Joseph Reaper and Julie Felix Friday, 8:30-10:00 in Auditorium III Come experience the action required to ensure that all students become mathematical thinkers and are prepared for any academic career or professional path they choose. Principles to Actions from NCTM sets forth a set of strongly recommended, research-informed actions for all teachers, coaches, and specialist in mathematics. North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) updates will also be given in this session. Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices 1. Establish mathematics goals to focus learning. 2. Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving. 3. Use and connect mathematical representations. 4. Facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse. 5. Pose purposeful questions. 6.
