NBHS News & Events

The NBHS Business Professionals of America chapter sent their executive board to the state leadership conference in Lansing on Monday, October 2.

The students were immersed in workshops immediately following registration, while Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Lyons participated in on the advisers meeting. During the advisers meeting the session leaders for the students stopped in to share what they were working on.

The first session was "creative thinking: the power of diverse teams." The emphasis during this session was to teach the student leaders that "Smart people don't turn down free help" and how to leverage resources in a group. This session was designed to empower our executive board to delegate responsibility and utilize talents within their team.

The second session focused on "building and maintaining networks." Students were introduced to the core function of networking from a strategic and tactical perspective. They were taught the importance of a confident and firm handshake (they were able to practice a lot too!) as well as why eye contact is important. Upon completion of the session the student leaders were able to identify who they connected with and how they could utilize those contacts in the future.

Here are some comments from the students after the conference: "I can't wait to go to college and do this for a living (networking and collaborating)." "It was really interesting meeting people from other schools like Dearborn, and bigger cities. We are from totally different places but, like, we can all bring something to the table and contribute." "This was so fun! I learned a lot."

After the BPA sessions we walked a couple blocks to the capital building where we were able to explore freely all the incredible rooms and history. It was a GREAT day!
