NAVIGATING PF What Causes Pulmonary Fibrosis? Finding a cause can be challenging. In some cases, lung scarring is secondary to another disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis) or is the result of exposure to a damaging substance in the environment or workplace. In most cases, no clear cause is identified, making it idiopathic — cause unknown. Effective treatments are available for some forms of PF. That’s why it’s important to search for an underlying cause to get a specific diagnosis. 10
