What Are the Symptoms of Pulmonary Fibrosis? The most common symptom of PF is shortness of breath, especially during exertion. Other symptoms include: A dry, hacking cough Fast, shallow breathing Shortness of breath, especially walking upstairs or inclines Weight loss Fatigue Clubbing (a widening or rounding of the tips of fingers and toes) The severity of symptoms varies from person to person. Some patients may have mild shortness of breath for years before being diagnosed. Shortness of breath is typically greater with activity and can progress to being present at rest or with minimal activity. It may even become difficult to breathe when taking a shower or talking on the phone. 9
